Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)

Vincent van Gogh first worked for his art dealer uncle in The Hague when he was only 15. Though his mother had already introduced him to drawing and though van Gogh enjoyed it a great deal, he was never given the opportunity to draw or paint while working for his uncle. In fact he wasn't a success at selling art work and he decided to pursue other things.

Shortly after working for his uncle in The Hague, van Gogh decided to  follow in his father's footsteps as a pastor. Van Gogh moved around to smaller communities throughout Europe hoping to spread his believes and offer help to those in need.
Van Gogh's attempt at being a missionary failed. His eccentric views and right-winged notions about his religion didn't appeal to those he hoped to teach.

It wasn't until 1880 that van Gogh decided to paint. After countless attempts at religious work he decided to fulfill his dream of sketching and painting. His first painting was the "The Potato Eaters" (1885). This canvas is considered to be his first masterpiece.

On this page you will find links to my favourite paintings. Posters of some of these paintings still hang on my bedroom wall at mum and dad's. I hope you enjoy them.
