SKETCHES

Vincent produced more than 1, 000 sketches in his ten short years as an artist.

As an admirer I have to say that it was hard for me to truly  appreciate Vincent's work without ever seeing his sketches.

His sketches were, for the most part, the first draft of his paintings. He wrote countless letters to his brother Théo and  often included a sketch he had worked on during that day.

Being that Théo was his financial supporter and an art dealer, it was to van Gogh's advantage to send his sketches. With professional advice he could, in theory, paint what people were buying.

As an admirer I have to say that it was hard for me to truly  appreciate Vincent's work without ever seeing his sketches.

Irony has it that he sold only one canvas in his living years.

A few of my favourite sketches:

"Old Man with his Head in his Hands"
"Olive Trees, Montmajour"
"Sorrow"
